What Cricket Teaches Us About Handling Pressure
In short

Last over, twelve runs needed, a full stadium watching. What great cricketers do in that moment — and how the same lessons help us at work and in life.

As a cricket fan, some of my strongest memories are not of centuries or trophies. They are of the final overs — when one ball can change everything and the whole country holds its breath. I have always wondered: how do these players stay so calm when we, watching from the sofa, can barely breathe?

The more I watched and read, the more I realised that handling pressure is not a gift. It is a skill. And it is a skill we can all learn — on the field, in the office and at home.

🏏 1. Play the Ball, Not the Scoreboard

Great batters often say they stop looking at the target and focus only on the next ball. Twelve runs in six balls feels impossible. One good shot off this ball feels possible.

In life: when a big task feels overwhelming, break it down. Don’t think about the whole project — think about the next hour.

🧘 2. Routines Calm the Mind

Watch a bowler before a run-up or a batter before facing a delivery. Many follow the same small routine every time — adjusting the gloves, tapping the bat, a deep breath. These rituals tell the mind, “I have done this a thousand times.”

In life: before an interview, a presentation or an exam, build a small routine. A deep breath, a glass of water, a quick look at your notes. Familiar steps bring calm.

💪 3. Preparation Is Confidence

The calm we see in the final over is built in thousands of hours of practice that nobody watches. When the moment comes, the body already knows what to do.

In life: confidence is not something you feel first and then prepare. It is something you earn by preparing.

🔄 4. Forget the Last Ball

A good bowler hit for a six walks back and bowls the next ball as if the six never happened. Carrying the last mistake only makes the next one more likely.

In life: a bad meeting, a wrong answer, a missed chance — learn from it, then let it go. The next ball is coming.

“Pressure is not the enemy. It is a sign that something you care about is on the line.”

🤝 5. Trust Your Team

No batter wins a match alone. Partnerships, good fielding and a captain’s calm voice all matter. Players under pressure lean on each other.

In life: you don’t have to carry every burden alone. Ask for help, share the load, and support others when it is their turn to face the last over.

🎯 6. Control What You Can

A player cannot control the pitch, the weather or the umpire. They can control their effort, their attitude and their next decision.

In life: spend your energy on what you can change. Let go of what you cannot.

🌟 The Final Over of Life

We all face our own final overs — exams, job changes, health worries, family decisions. We won’t win every match. But we can walk out to bat calm, prepared and focused on the next ball.

That is what cricket really teaches us: not how to win every time, but how to stay steady when it matters most.
