Play Again: Why Every Adult Needs a Sport in Their Life

Most of us stop playing sports after college and only watch from the sofa. Why picking up a sport again — badminton, cricket, football or anything — is great for your body, mind and friendships.
When I was in school and college, I played every evening. Cricket, football, even kabaddi when there were enough people. Then came work, marriage, kids, deadlines — and slowly the only sport left in my life was the one on TV.
A few years ago, a colleague dragged me to a Saturday badminton game. I was out of breath in ten minutes. But I went back the next week, and the next. Today it is the best two hours of my week.
🏃 Why Adults Need to Play
The World Health Organization recommends that adults do at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity every week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity. A couple of games of badminton or football plus a few walks can easily get you there.
But the benefits go far beyond numbers:
- Your heart and lungs get stronger.
- Stress melts away — for an hour, all you think about is the shuttle or the ball.
- Sleep improves after an active day.
- You make real friends outside work and family.
- You become a role model — kids who see parents play are more likely to stay active themselves.
🎯 Gym vs Sport: Why Sport Is Easier to Stick With
Many of us join a gym in January and stop by March. A sport is different: it is fun, social and competitive. You don’t want to let your team down, so you show up. The exercise happens almost without you noticing.
🏸 Sports That Are Easy to Start as an Adult
- Badminton — indoor courts everywhere, small groups, great cardio.
- Weekend cricket — box cricket and turf grounds make it easy to play in the city.
- Football or futsal — fast, fun and a full-body workout.
- Swimming — easy on the joints, good for all ages.
- Table tennis — great for reflexes, and many offices have a table.
- Running or cycling groups — for those who prefer going solo but enjoy company.
⚠️ Start Smart, Not Fast
- If you are over 40 or have a health condition, check with your doctor first.
- Warm up for 5–10 minutes and stretch after playing.
- Buy proper shoes for your sport — it prevents many injuries.
- Start with shorter, lighter sessions and build up over a few weeks.
- Drink water before, during and after playing.
