Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana: A Simple Guide for Parents of Daughters
In short

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana offers 8.2% interest (Oct–Dec 2026) and tax benefits for a girl child’s future. Who can open it, how much to deposit, when it matures — explained simply.

When a daughter is born, every Indian parent starts dreaming — her education, her career, her wedding someday. One of the simplest and safest ways to start saving for those dreams is the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), a government-backed scheme launched under the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign.

📌 Key Features at a Glance

  • Interest rate: 8.2% a year for October–December 2026. The government reviews small-savings rates every quarter.
  • Who can open: parents or legal guardians, for a girl child below 10 years of age. Up to two girls per family (more in the case of twins or triplets).
  • Deposit: minimum ₹250 and maximum ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year.
  • Deposit period: 15 years from the date of opening.
  • Maturity: 21 years from the date of opening.
  • Where: any post office or authorised bank.

💰 Tax Benefits

Under the old tax regime, deposits qualify for deduction under the ₹1.5 lakh limit (Section 80C), and both the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. That makes SSY one of the few “exempt-exempt-exempt” products. Under the new tax regime there is no deduction for the deposit, but the interest and maturity remain tax-free.

🎓 Withdrawals

Once your daughter turns 18 (or passes Class 10), you can withdraw up to 50% of the balance from the previous year for her higher education. The account can also be closed early for her marriage after she turns 18.

🧮 How Much Can It Grow To?

Because you deposit for 15 years but the account keeps earning interest for 21, compounding does a lot of the work. Even a modest monthly saving can grow into a meaningful amount by the time she is in her early twenties.

⚖️ Is SSY Enough on Its Own?

  • Pros: government-backed safety, high fixed-income rate, tax-free returns, forced long-term discipline.
  • Cons: money is locked in for a long time; the rate can change every quarter; returns may not beat equity over 21 years.

Many parents combine SSY (for safety) with a small equity SIP (for growth) and keep an emergency fund separately.

“The best gift for a daughter is not gold — it’s a future she can choose for herself.”

✅ How to Open an Account

  1. Visit your nearest post office or a bank that offers SSY.
  2. Carry your daughter’s birth certificate, and the parent’s ID and address proof (Aadhaar, PAN) and photographs.
  3. Fill the form and make the first deposit.
  4. Set up a standing instruction or a yearly reminder so you never miss the minimum deposit.

Rates and rules are as of October 2026 and may change. Please confirm with your bank or post office. This is not financial advice.
