Train Travel in India: Simple Booking and Journey Tips for Families
In short

From IRCTC booking basics and Tatkal to packing and safety on board, a simple guide for families who want stress-free train journeys in India.

Some of my happiest childhood memories are from train journeys. Lemon rice packed in banana leaf, the window seat fight, chai sellers at every station, and falling asleep to the rhythm of the wheels.

Trains are still one of the most affordable and comfortable ways for families to travel in India. A little planning makes the journey even better.

🎫 Booking Basics

  • Use official channels. Book on the IRCTC website or app, or at railway reservation counters. Avoid unknown websites and agents offering “confirmed seats” for extra money.
  • Know the booking window. Since November 2024, the advance reservation period for most trains is 60 days (excluding the day of journey). Popular trains for festivals and holidays fill up within minutes, so note the opening date — the countdown timer helps.
  • Keep your IRCTC profile ready. Save the master passenger list with names, ages and ID details so you do not lose time while booking.
  • Choose berths wisely. Ask for lower berths for elders and pregnant women; the system tries to allot them for senior citizens when available.

⏱️ Understanding Tatkal

Tatkal is for last-minute travel. It opens one day before the journey (not counting the journey date): at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes. Tatkal fares are higher than normal fares.

In 2025, Indian Railways made Aadhaar-based authentication mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets online through IRCTC, and added OTP verification for Tatkal tickets booked at counters and by agents. Agents are also not allowed to book in the first 30 minutes of the Tatkal window. From October 2025, Aadhaar authentication has also been needed for general-quota online bookings made in the first 15 minutes after booking opens. Rules change from time to time, so check the latest on the official IRCTC site before your booking day and make sure your account is verified in advance.

📋 Waitlist, RAC and Confirmation

  • WL (waitlist): No berth yet. Fully waitlisted e-tickets are generally auto-cancelled and refunded if they do not confirm by chart preparation.
  • RAC: You can board and get a shared side-lower berth; it may become a full berth later.
  • CNF: Confirmed. Check your coach and berth after the chart is prepared.
  • Check your PNR status on the official app or website, not through random links.
  • Cancel early if plans change. Cancellation charges were tightened in 2026, and cancelling close to departure can mean little or no refund. Check the current refund rules on IRCTC.

🎒 Packing for the Journey

  • A valid original photo ID for at least one passenger on the ticket.
  • Home-cooked food for the first meal; water bottles; dry snacks.
  • A light shawl or blanket — AC coaches can be cold at night.
  • A small chain and lock for luggage under the berth.
  • Medicines, wet wipes, hand sanitiser and a small torch.
  • A power bank, since charging points may be shared.

🛡️ Safety on Board

  • Do not accept food or drinks from strangers.
  • Keep valuables in a small bag on your body, especially while sleeping.
  • Don’t let children hang near doors or windows of moving trains.
  • Get down only at scheduled stops, and get back in well before the train moves.
  • For help on a journey, Indian Railways’ integrated helpline is 139, and the RailMadad app or portal accepts complaints.
  • Be careful on station Wi-Fi with banking apps — see my public Wi-Fi safety tips.

😊 Make It Fun

Turn off the phone for a while. Play word games, read a book together, watch the fields go by, and talk to your co-passengers. Some of the warmest conversations happen between strangers sharing a train compartment.

“On a train, the journey is not the gap between places. It is the place.”

✨ Takeaway

Book early through official channels, understand Tatkal and waitlist basics, pack light but smart, and stay alert. Do that, and a train journey becomes not just transport, but a cherished part of your family holiday.
