Questions
What are the cut-offs for diabetes?
The American Diabetes Association criteria, also used by most Indian labs and doctors: fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL is normal, 100–125 is prediabetes and 126 or more suggests diabetes. For the 2-hour glucose test: below 140 normal, 140–199 prediabetes, 200 or more diabetes. For HbA1c: below 5.7% normal, 5.7–6.4% prediabetes, 6.5% or more diabetes.
How do I convert mg/dL to mmol/L?
Divide mg/dL by 18 (more exactly 18.016). So 126 mg/dL ≈ 7.0 mmol/L and 200 mg/dL ≈ 11.1 mmol/L. Multiply mmol/L by 18 to go back.
Is one high result enough to diagnose diabetes?
No. Unless there are clear symptoms with a very high random sugar (200 mg/dL or more), the result should be confirmed by repeating the test or with a second, different test. Please discuss your results with a doctor.
