Questions

Which hash should I use?

Use SHA-256 or stronger. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes, but are still fine for spotting accidental file corruption.

How do I verify a downloaded file?

Choose the file, then paste the checksum from the download page into Compare. A green match means the file is exactly the same.

Can a hash be reversed?

No — hashes are one-way. But short or common passwords can be guessed, which is why passwords must be stored with slow salted algorithms like bcrypt or Argon2, not plain SHA-256.
