Questions
What are the Tamil digits?
௦ 0, ௧ 1, ௨ 2, ௩ 3, ௪ 4, ௫ 5, ௬ 6, ௭ 7, ௮ 8, ௯ 9. Tamil also has special signs for ௰ ten, ௱ hundred and ௲ thousand.
What is the difference between the modern and traditional forms?
The modern form writes each digit in place, just like 0–9 (2026 → ௨௦௨௬). The traditional form has no zero and uses the ten, hundred and thousand signs instead: 2026 → ௨௲௨௰௬ (2 × 1000 + 2 × 10 + 6).
How are numbers written in Tamil words?
Tens join units with sandhi: 25 is இருபத்தைந்து, 21 is இருபத்தொன்று. Hundreds and thousands take a joining form before the rest: 125 is நூற்று இருபத்தைந்து and 2026 is இரண்டாயிரத்து இருபத்தாறு. Spoken Tamil often shortens these.
