Questions
What is the current NSC interest rate?
7.7% a year for October–December 2026 (Q3 FY 2026-27), compounded every year and paid at maturity after 5 years. ₹1 lakh grows to ₹1,44,903. The rate on the purchase date stays fixed for the full term.
Does NSC save tax?
Under the old regime the investment qualifies for the ₹1.5 lakh deduction, and the interest earned in years 1–4 is treated as reinvested, so it can be claimed as a fresh deduction too. The new regime has no such deduction.
Is NSC interest taxable?
Yes, at your slab rate. Show the yearly accrued interest as income (and claim it as reinvested under the old regime); the final year's interest is taxable when the NSC matures.
